The Mainchance Drop-In Center is the Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services Corporation’s multi-service facility and our home base. At Mainchance, clients can stay in emergency overnight shelter, receive various services including housing, medical care, and social work, catch a bus to a faith-based overnight bed program, and enjoy three meals a day in our kitchen.
The GCNSSC Mainchance Drop-In Center serves a diverse homeless population of single adults in and around Midtown Manhattan, but our reach extends throughout NYC. As one of the city’s largest drop-in centers, we assist individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and cultures. Most importantly, we offer a refuge from the streets in a protective, welcoming, and supportive environment—available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
In August 2004, we moved to our new space at 120 East 32nd Street. The building’s name was inspired by the phrase “having an eye for the main chance,” which describes someone always looking to improve their situation. We named our new center Mainchance after this expression because it symbolizes giving clients their best chance at a new future filled with opportunity and hope.
